Pathway Eleven or an 11 plus tutor?

Not “which is better”. Six separate questions, and the two options answer them differently.

TutorLab publishes a Birmingham band of £40 to £60 an hour, and Atom Learning puts a year of weekly sessions in the Birmingham area at £2,000 to £3,000. Rather than repeat the whole published picture here, what 11 plus tuition costs gathers every figure with its publisher and its date. What matters on this page is the comparison. If you are looking locally, choosing a tutor locally sets out the questions to ask.

One region, one figure. Hourly rates are not the same everywhere, and this page carries only what its two sources publish. TutorLab's figure is for Birmingham. Atom Learning's wider band of £40 to £80 an hour is published as a UK figure rather than one attached to a named city, and neither article cited here publishes a London or South East rate, so none is printed. If you are outside the West Midlands, treat the Birmingham band as the West Midlands band and ask locally.

The objection worth naming. Plenty of parents look at £49 a month and think: that is software, and a tutor is a person. It is a fair thing to say out loud. What the monthly price buys is not an adult's attention; it is the work that happens on the days nobody is booked, chosen and marked without a parent having to do it. Whether that is worth £49 depends on how many of those days there are, not on how the two things feel next to each other.

The honest reading of that table is not that one is cheap and the other is expensive. It is that they are different purchases. A tutor hour buys an adult's attention for an hour. A month of Pathway Eleven buys daily work on the days between, chosen for the child, with the marking done. That is why the next section is about what each one is actually for.

A tutor gives three things software cannot. The first is live explanation: a child who has misunderstood something can be watched, questioned and redirected in the moment, and a good tutor spots a misconception almost at once. The second is accountability, which for some children is the whole point, because work happens because somebody is coming on Thursday. The third is a relationship, and for an anxious child a calm adult who is not their parent can be worth more than any content.

Pathway Eleven gives four things an hour a week cannot. Daily work, on the six days a tutor is not there, chosen from where the child actually is rather than from where the book has got to. Timed practice and full mock rehearsals under real exam timings, which is a distinct skill from knowing the content. Questions in the bank that are reviewed and approved by a qualified teacher before release. And a parent view that shows minutes recorded, mocks completed and accuracy by subject, so nobody has to ask a ten-year-old how it went.

Neither list is a criticism of the other. They are the shape of the two products. An hour is an hour, and daily is daily.

Many families do. For families who can afford both, it is often the strongest arrangement, and the pattern that works looks like this.

The daily plan carries the volume: short work most days, adapting as the child improves, with the marking and the record keeping done automatically. The tutor is booked less often, perhaps fortnightly rather than weekly, and each session is spent on the two or three things the parent view says are not moving. The tutor stops being the person who covers the syllabus and becomes the person who unblocks it, which is what an expert hour is best spent on.

At a Birmingham rate of £40 to £60 an hour, a fortnightly tutor plus Pathway Eleven costs less across a year than weekly tuition alone, and work happens on the days between sessions. Whether that trade suits your family depends on how much your child needs an adult in the room, which is a judgement no comparison table can make for you.

These are the cases where an hour of an adult's time is the thing being bought, and no amount of software substitutes for it. If two or three of these describe your child, book the tutor and do not feel talked out of it.

• A misconception nobody at home can find. The child gets the same kind of question wrong and cannot say why. Finding that takes somebody watching the working, not marking the answer.
• Work only happens when somebody is expecting them. For some children the appointment is the mechanism, and a plan on a screen will not supply it.
• Anxiety that needs a calm adult who is not you. A tutor can absorb that in a way a parent at the kitchen table often cannot.
• A diagnosed need that has to be planned around. An experienced human adapting in the room is the right answer, and it is worth paying for.
• A short, specific job. One topic, a handful of sessions, then stop. At £40 to £60 an hour on TutorLab's published Birmingham figure, a targeted block of six is a modest spend.

And these are the cases where the hour is not what is missing. What is missing is the other six days, and that is what a daily plan is for.

• You want work happening most days, not once a week. The plan chooses it, marks it and records it without anybody being booked.
• You are starting early. One plan runs from Year 3 through to the test sat as a child enters Year 6, with the difficulty stepping up as they strengthen.
• You want to see what was done. Minutes recorded, mocks completed and accuracy by subject, rather than a verbal update at the door.
• The annual figure is the sticking point. Atom Learning publishes £2,000 to £3,000 a year for weekly tutoring in its Birmingham band; twelve months here is about £588.
• You want to rehearse the exam itself. Full papers under real exam timings, marked on submission. Mock rehearsals are part of full membership rather than the trial, and they unlock from Year 4.

Both, if you can, and if your child benefits from an adult in the room. Daily coverage plus occasional expert unblocking is a better use of the same money than an hour a week and nothing in between.
